cud

pronunciation:
kuhd
part of speech: noun
definition: Cows are a kind of animal that chews its food more than once. A cow chews and swallows some food and it goes to the first of their four stomachs. A bit later, food from this first stomach comes back up into their mouth and they chew that food again. An amount of food that comes back up at one time and is chewed again is called "cud." Chewing the food just once is not enough because the food is not chewed very completely the first time. The stomach needs to help in breaking the food up. When the cud comes back into the cows mouth, the cows mouth and teeth can do a better job.
Giraffes and sheep are some other animals that chew their cud.
