When we talk about legumes, we are talking about a certain family of plants. This family includes foods like beans and peas. All legumes develop their seeds inside "pods." A pod is a kind of natural container that holds the seeds of the plant. Sometimes we eat the pods produced by legumes, but most of the time, we eat just the seeds from inside the pod, like when we eat beans in chili or cooked peas with carrots. We call the seeds of these plants "legumes" too.
Soybeans are an important legume. Cooking oil and soy sauce are made from soybean plants. The seeds of soybean plants are eaten steamed or roasted.Did you know that peanuts are not really nuts? They are legumes.
