American explorer Robert Gray named the Columbia River after his ship in 1792. The entire area around the river was then called "Columbia." When the United States and Canada drew a boundary through Columbia in 1846, the Canadian part became known as
British Columbia. British Columbia became a Canadian Province in 1871.
