chemical element

pronunciation:
ke mih kl el mnt
part of speech: noun
definition: Everything in our world and in space is made up of different chemical elements. Things like oxygen, lead, iron, and gold are some of these elements. Chemical elements are the very simple building blocks of all other things. They are pure substances. That means that they are made up of only one type of thing--one type of atom. The element iron, for example, is made up of only atoms of iron. It's not mixed with anything else. The chemical elements do mix with other chemical elements, though. That's how we get things like water, which is made up of two elements: oxygen and hydrogen.
Chemical elements can take the form of liquids, solids, or gases.
