A scallop is a small animal that lives in the ocean. It is an invertebrate, which means that is has no back bone. A scallop has a soft body, and it protects itself by living inside of two shells that are attached to each other. These shells can be opened and closed by the scallop using a large muscle of its body. People sometimes eat this muscle. Scallops are members of a group of animals called "mollusks" and they are closely related to clams.
Scallops quickly open and close their shells to make themselves move through the water.
