A staple is a short, stiff metal wire. People use staples to hold pieces of paper together or to attach things to a hard surface. When a staple is open, it is shaped like the letter U. When it is open, it can be pushed through a number of papers. After it is through the papers, it can be closed to hold the papers together. A tool called a stapler is used to push the staple through and to close it.
We ran out of staples, so we had to use tape to hold our papers together.
