Word History
In 1870, Britain gave Canada control of Rupert's Land and the area north and west of Rupert's Land, which Britain called "the North West Territory." Canada combined the two areas into the Northwest Territories. In 1999, the Northwest Territories were divided into Nunavut and a smaller Northwest Territories.
