electoral vote

electoral vote

pronunciation:
ih lek tr l vot
part of speech: noun
definition 1: the tally of the votes cast by the electors of the electoral college in a U.S. presidential election. In most states, the winner of the popular vote receives one hundred percent of that state's electoral vote; therefore, the percentage of the total electoral vote cast for each candidate may not reflect the percentage of the popular vote cast for each candidate.
In the 2000 U.S. presidential election, the democratic candidate, Al Gore, won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote, and consequently did not become president.
definition 2: the individual vote cast by an elector of the electoral college in a U.S. presidential election.
He won the popular vote in New York, so he received all thirty-one of the state's electoral votes.
