a thin white crust of dead skin that forms on the scalp and is shed in flakes. |
fault |
a break in part of the earth's crust that is like a crack in the surface of the earth. A fault can be small or it can be hundreds of miles long. Because of the break between the surfaces, the surfaces can move and become uneven with each other. [1/4 definitions] |
iron |
a heavy silver-gray metal that is one of the chemical elements. Iron rusts easily and can be magnetized. It is found in many minerals in the earth's crust and is also found in blood. Iron is often combined with other metals to form alloys such as steel. (symbol: Fe) [1/9 definitions] |
mantle |
the layer of the earth that lies between the crust and the core. The crust is the top layer of the earth--the layer we live on. The core is the center of our earth. The mantle is very thick and makes up most of the entire planet. [1/2 definitions] |

plate tectonics |
(used with a singular verb) a theory that scientists use to explain the movement of continents, the eruption of volcanoes, and other changes or events in the earth's geology. The theory of plate tectonics says that the earth's crust is made up of separate sections that are like very large plates. These sections move around constantly because they float on melted rock. The movement of these sections of the crust causes earthquakes. |
scab |

tart2 |
a small baked pastry shell with a fruit or other filling. Tarts sometimes do not have a top crust. |
tectonic plate |
one of the plate-like segments of the Earth's crust and upper mantle. The plates form the outer shell of the planet, and they are actually moving very slowly. Where the plates come into contact with each other, their movement can cause or play a part in the eruption of volcanoes, the building of mountains, and the occurrence of earthquakes. |
tectonics |
the study of the crust of a planet and how it is constructed. |
volcano |
an opening in the earth's crust through which melted rock, ash, and gases are forced out. [1/2 definitions] |
