landfill A landfill is a place where trucks bring waste from cities or towns. The landfill is a low area of land that gets filled up with this waste. The waste is eventually covered with dirt and becomes "new land" in a way. The waste itself, mixed with other things, is sometimes used to build up new land in a body of water, like a harbor, for example. New buildings or even airports can be constructed on top of waste from a landfill. This building material itself is also called "landfill."
