latitude When we talk about latitude, we are talking about how far north or south of the equator something is. If we look at a globe, the equator is shown as a line that goes all the way around the earth. It divides the earth into a top half and a bottom half. Latitude, the distance of something north or south of the equator, is measured in units called "degrees."
parallel any of the imaginary lines that circle the earth in the same direction as the equator. Parallels mark degrees of latitude. [1/5 definitions]
zone any of the five areas of the earth's surface, marked by latitude lines, and named according to the region's temperature. There are two frigid zones, two temperate zones, and one torrid zone. [1/3 definitions]
