part of speech: noun
inflections: volcanoes, volcanos
definition: A volcano is a mountain made from hot, melted rock that has come up from deep inside the earth. The melted rock comes through an opening in the earth's surface with a lot of force. When this happens, we say that the volcano is erupting. Sometimes a volcano does not erupt for thousands of years, but then it becomes active again. Each time a volcano erupts, the hot liquid rock cools and makes the volcano bigger in size.
When a volcano erupts, it sends out melted rock called lava. It also sends out lots of smoke, ash, and small rocks.Volcanoes can be dangerous, but nowadays scientists can tell when a volcano is becoming active. Many people live in places that have volcanoes. Japan is a country that has very many, but most of them are not active.
